The game of Poker begins with a dealer. The dealer is responsible for dealing the cards to players in a particular order. A dealer must offer a shuffled pack to his opponent for cutting. This player must then decide whether or not to bet on the dealer’s hand. If he or she is not willing to take the bet, he or she can check the hand. This is called “sandbagging.” It is allowed, unless the rules of the game prohibit the practice.
The three main poker structures are pot-limit, fixed-limit, and no-limit. In fixed-limit, the betting amounts are standard and cannot exceed them. The initial bettor can only bet X and must raise by X. Pot-limit poker allows a player to bet any amount up to the pot size. Any raisers may raise the previous bet to the full pot size. The player who makes the highest-ranking hand wins the pot.
