Slot

A slot is an area that extends toward the blue line of a rink in ice hockey. The high slot is a spot right in front of the goaltender, and the low slot is a small area in the middle of the ice, between face-off circles.

The slot is often taken up by a running back or a tight end, but can also be used by a fullback. In some situations, slotbacks are actually used as wide receivers.

Slot receivers are a quick, nimble type of receiver. They can be used in a variety of ways, such as blocking defenders, or running slants and quick outs. However, in most cases, they line up just behind the line of scrimmage and run short routes.

Slot demo receivers are most commonly used to create multiple ball receiver formations. They can also be used to help protect the quarterback. The main responsibility of a slot receiver is to generate mismatches against the linebackers.

Slot receivers can play as many as three on the field at a time. These receivers can line up in either the Outside Slot or the Inside Slot. Using these positions, players can create mismatches and pick up defenders.

One of the best shots in hockey is the well-placed one-timer from the high slot. In this scenario, the center puts a stick out in front of the goalie to redirect the shot. A player like Branden Cooks can stretch a defense vertically off of pure speed.
