In almost all variants of poker, players bet with poker chips. A typical set of chips includes a red chip, one white chip, and two, four, or five blue chips. Players “buy in” by purchasing chips. The amount of money required is a similar for each player. However, it’s not necessary for everyone to buy in to the game. It’s always wise to keep an extra supply of chips on hand for emergencies.
In many games of poker, the betting intervals are fixed, which means that no one can bet more than they have before. After a draw, players have the privilege to bet more than they already have. Players are said to be active if they place chips into the pot at an equal or higher amount than the player ahead of them. In some games, players are required to call opponents’ bets before committing their chips to the pot.
